Bike Safety Tips While in Pine Creek

What better way to see the Pine Creek Valley and the Pine Creek Rail Trail (PCRT) than by bike. Thousands of bike riders flock to the Pine Creek Valley every year to complete the 60+ mile (one-way) trip from Jersey Shore to Wellsboro. Most people take advantage of primitive camping along the way at some of the camp sites that dot the trail.
If you’re the most avid biker, you may even compete to finish the trail in one day. Either way, please stay safe while traveling along the rail trail and don’t forget about these simple safety tips.
Always wear a helmet.
We don’t need to say it twice, but safety first. Always.
Be visible.
Yes, there are long stretches of straightaways along the trail where you can see plenty of far ahead, but in the evening hours, the leaves on the trees provide for a thick canopy blocking the setting sun. Be visible, and consider wearing a reflective vest or light if it’s getting into the dusk hours.
Follow traffic laws.
Regular traffic laws do apply, and while there are not many road crossings, always watch for vehicles and ride with traffic. Don’t forget your hand signals!
Maintain your bike.
Have you ever ridden with a flat tire? How about your bike chain busts while going uphill? These can be easily repaired or planned for by some simple bike maintenance and a pre-ride check.
Avoid distractions.
We all love music, but it’s a little hard to hear someone yelling about a rattlesnake sighting, or a bear on the trail (these things do happen). Enjoy mother nature’s soundtrack. And for the courtesy of others, if you must listen to music, please keep the volume down low if not using headphones.
Ride with a buddy.
It’s fun and relaxing! What better way to experience Pine Creek than with a friend, especially if it’s a first-timer to the trail. A buddy can also run out if there is an emergency, so plan ahead and bring a friend if you can.
